Marjorie Elkins, a lifelong resident of Marshall County

BENTON, Ky. - Marjorie Elkins, a lifelong resident of Marshall County, passed away on March 24, 2013. She was 88 years old, and passed away just two days after her birthday. Marjorie Elkins was married to James E. Elkins of Benton, KY, who passed away in 1989. Her survivors are her sons, James R. Elkins, a law professor at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia, and Dr. Derrell Elkins, a veterinarian Surgeon who practices in Indianapolis, Indiana and Murray, KY. Derrell resides part-time on the family farm located three miles west of Hardin. Marjorie Elkins lived in California for a brief period when her husband served in the Army during WWII. After the war, they were in the donut shop business with other members of the Elkins family but decided to try their hand at farming. After a brief period at farming, they both worked at the Merit Clothing Company in Mayfield, KY. James abandoned factory work to take up construction work and eventually became a skilled carpenter, work that he engaged in, along with farming until his retirement. Marjorie Elkins was active in farm work and continued to manage her son, Jim Elkins's farm until her death. In 1994 Mrs. Elkins received the Goodyear/NACD Conservation Award of Merit and was named Outstanding Cooperator that same year by the Marshall Country Conservation District for her efforts in soil and water conservation.

Marjorie and James Elkins operated a grocery store on what was once Highway 80 for many years and continued to farm. Retired for over 30 years Marjorie Elkins continued her active involvement in farm work, gardening and her life-long love of flowers.

In addition to her sons, she is survived by a sister, Deborah Stone of Benton, KY., one brother, Barney Thweatt of Benton, KY., four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one sister, Peggy Culver.

A celebration of the life of Marjorie T. Elkins will be held Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at 3:00 PM at the graveside in the Thweatt Cemetery, Benton, KY.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Lourdes Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 7100, Paducah, KY 42002.
