lionsclub soapboxOWENSBORO, Ky. (8/28/13) - In July, Owensboro was named "Outstanding Race City" of 2013 by the FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby. Owensboro resident, Chris Settles, said he was "excited" to hear this.

"It was our goal. We wanted to build something the kids would want to come to, and this award proves they want to race here," Settles said.

If you interested in family fun for all, you might want to make plans to attend Owensboro's Soap Box Derby Rally upcoming race. Owensboro's last local soap box competition of the year, hosted by the Lions Club, is scheduled for Sept. 7 and 8.

These upcoming rally races provide the opportunity for racers to connect, compete, and improve upon their skills. The most recent race in Owensboro was held on Aug. 10 and 11. 32 cars participated in this event, according to Settles.

"Since gas prices have gone up, and with the economy being down, if we have 30 cars, I'd say that's a good turnout" Settles said.

Settles and his family began competing in soap box derbies in 2002. He enjoys the family aspect of racing the most.

"It's all about coming together to get the car down the hill in the fastest time," he said. "We win together; we lose together."

The rally race will be held at Ben Hawes City Park at 400 Booth Field Rd.

For more race information, contact Settles at 270-929-6853 or Ron Leonard at 270-929-5515.
