Letter to the Editor - Your Contribution Does Make A Difference!

united way 300MADISONVILLE, Ky.  (10/24/13) — The United Way of the Coalfield is once again seeking donations through our annual campaign to make a difference in our community through the work of our “Community Partner Agencies”.

When you invest in United Way you are investing in your community, and YOUR contribution DOES make a difference.

This year we are asking our community to assist us in raising $500,000 through our annual campaign. We have made the decision to increase our campaign goal this aggressively because it is the amount presently needed to make a substantial “Difference” in the funding of our Community Partner Agencies to better assist them in creating opportunities and making a sustained difference within our community.

Your contribution makes a difference by helping provide funding for disaster response through the American Red Cross, so when disaster strikes you or your neighbors are not facing that disaster alone.

Your contribution makes a difference by helping Big Brothers Big Sisters continue to match children with positive adult role models and conduct school based mentoring programs.
Your contribution makes a difference by funding Family Advocacy parenting classes and their CASA program of Court Appointed Special Advocates so a child who has suffered abuse does not have to face their abuser alone.

Your contribution makes a difference through providing area children and youth development and leadership skills offered by Hopkins County 4-H.

Your contribution makes a difference by providing critical medical services to the working uninsured through the relief offered through the caring professional hands of the Hopkins County Community Clinic.

Your contribution makes a difference in a child’s life by providing scholarships to cover a portion of their child care cost through the Hopkins County Family YMCA Kids’ Center which allows their mother to return to school and build her skills so she can build a better tomorrow for her and her children.

Your contribution makes a difference in the life of a home bound senior by providing home cooked meals delivered daily by the caring hands of PACS Home Delivery Meal Program.
Your contribution makes a difference by supporting two sheltered workshops providing rehabilitation and hope to those with special needs through the Muhlenberg County Opportunity Center and Trace Industries where it is not just the training and rehabilitation that is making a difference but also the social interaction with other adults showing they care.

Your contribution makes a difference by funding a program for retired senior citizens who want to continue giving back to the community through their time and skill by working in local human service agencies through the PACS Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

Your contribution makes a difference by ensuring individuals and families in crisis receive emergency assistance of food, utilities, medicine and other crucial needs through the helping hands of The Salvation Army programs.

Your contribution makes a difference to a man or woman that has suffered domestic violence by knowing there is someone to care, support, and shelter them and their children in time of crisis through Sanctuary.

By now I hope you have seen that YOUR contribution DOES make a difference to ensure that no one is left behind or forgotten in our community when you support the United Way. Our Community Partner Agencies assisted over 32,800 people in Hopkins and Muhlenberg Counties last year!

You can take comfort in knowing only 1 percent of the monies we raised in last year’s campaign went to support United Way national and state affiliation dues, 17 percent went to support the salaries of a two person staffed local office, 74 percent was distributed back into our Community through grants administered by our United Way. Hopefully you will see the money raised here stays here and administrative costs are held to a minimum so that donations can be put to use by the nonprofits in the community which they were raised.

Your contribution ensures a basic safety net remains in place for individuals and families in crisis, your contribution ensures that our local children and youth are nurtured, your contribution ensures health and wellness services are there for those who cannot afford it, your contribution ensures there is hope and opportunity for a better tomorrow.

And over the last 10 years through our local United Way campaigns over $3,600,000.00 has been given out to our Community Partner Agencies to ensure just that!

So today we invite you to become part of that change, knowing that YOUR contribution DOES make a difference! And your contribution makes a difference by staying in your local community. Because the money we raise here stays here working to improve the lives of those who live here.

Each of us can make a difference through our giving and united we can reach out a hand to one and influence the condition of all, but it all starts with one person, “YOU”.

For more information about all of the United Way’s programs, contributing, or to view our 2013 Campaign Video visit our website at www.unitedwayofthecoalfield.org, by calling 270-821-3170 or better yet just stop by for a visit at our office located at 1 South Main Street here in Madisonville and hear firsthand how your support can make a difference.
