LEXINGTON, Ky. - Thelma Blackburn, 90, of Lexington, KY, formerly of Pike County, passed this life on Jan. 5, 2013 at St. Joseph Hospice Care Center surrounded by loved ones.
She was the daughter of Joe and Kelsie Charles Plymale. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clell Blackburn; two sons, Benjamin and Jerry Blackburn; and one brother Clyde (Buster) Plymale.
She is survived by two daughters, Gail Ward, Lexington, KY, and Glendora (Thadus) Helvey, Pikeville, KY; four grandchildren, Mark Blackburn, David (Diane) Blackburn, Brenda Spedding, and Deidra (Steve) Kendrick; six great grandchildren, Kennedy and Kamryn Blackburn, Savannah, John Robert and Elizabeth Spedding of Lexington, and Haley Wagner of Pikeville; two step grandchildren, Justin and Daniel Price of Lexington; Four half sisters, Beatrice Newsome, Helen Moore, Eula Lowe, and Mildred Nichols; one half brother, Harold Collins; one sister-in-law, Lorna Plymale; a special niece, Muriel Kosky; a very special friend, Barbara Blackburn.
She retired from Central Baptist Hospital after 44 years of hospital based services. On Jan. 4, 1999 she re-entered the work force at 77 years of age as a Wal-Mart Greeter on Nicholasville Rd on the first day of its opening. She loved greeting the customers and considered her Wal-Mart co-workers as a part of her family. She loved her Church family and was a faithful member of the Fayette Church of Christ.
Visitation will be 4 – 8 pm Tues. at the funeral home. Funeral services are 10:30 am Wed. at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd. Burial will follow at Blackburn Family Cemetery , John’s Creek, KY.
