LEXINGTON, Ky. - Ethyl Terry Childs Bailey, 87, passed away January 27, 2013 at Baptist Hospital East in Louisville, KY following a lengthy illness. Born September 4, 1925 in Charlotte, NC to Ethyl Willson Childs and Harry B. Childs, Terry grew up in St. Petersburg, FL from late 1925 to 1946. In 1946, she “adjusted” her age upward by one year so that she could join the U.S. Navy WAVES; she served two years in the medical corps as a Pharmacist Mate. Upon discharge from the Navy she attended Temple University and became a Registered Dental Hygienist.
On September 1, 1948, Terry married Harry Hudson “Hank” Bailey of Charlotte Court House, VA and they moved to Michigan State University where Hank received his Ph.D. and Terry received training in Elementary Education. They relocated to Lexington, KY in 1956 where Hank began his career at the University of KY and Terry finished her B.A. and M.A. in Education and 40 hours of additional graduate work in the field of Reading. Terry taught at Sayre School and The Lexington School for a total of twenty-five years and received numerous awards for her outstanding teaching ability. In 1959 with their three children in tow, Terry and Hank went to Bogor, Indonesia for two years where Hank taught agronomy at the University of Indonesia and Terry taught children of the American professors. In the 1980s, Terry and Hank returned to Indonesia for another two years. Terry taught English to graduate students and reading to undergraduate students at Sriwijaya University in Palembang. As a result of her foreign teaching experience, Terry wrote a booklet entitled Helpful Hints for Reading and English Improvement which can now be found on the website of the International Book Project where Terry and Hank were volunteers for many years.
Teaching was Terry’s year round passion. During summer breaks over the course of many years, she took nearly one thousand high school and college students to study in Europe, Scandinavia, and the Orient. Following Hank’s death in 1990, Terry moved back to St. Petersburg where she lived until October 2011 when she moved to Westport Place Health Campus in Louisville to be closer to her children and their families.
Terry is predeceased by her loving husband, Hank, of 42 years who was Professor Emeritus in the College of Agriculture at UK and Retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves; brothers William Willson Childs and Harry B. Childs II; and sister Ruth Lefter. She is survived by three children, Linda Bailey (Vic Green) of Centerville, OH; Ruth Bailey of Lexington, KY; and Hudson Lee Bailey (Brenda Case Bailey) and grandson, Kevin Joseph Bailey, all of Louisville, KY.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Milward Celebration Center, 1509 Trent Blvd, Lexington, KY. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. the following day with burial in Lexington Cemetery.
