LEXINGTON, Ky. - Wanda Lea Elkins, 84, loving mother, grandmother and sister passed into eternal life January 29, 2013.
She was born August 14, 1928 to Martha and Cecil Denton in Bristol, VA. She worked at The Weaving Company in Bristol until she was recruited to Monroe Machine Company to play in their women’s basketball league. She loved basketball and excelled in the league with the nickname of “Star”. She met her late husband, Bob Elkins while playing basketball for him. In 1967 they moved to Lexington when Bob joined IBM.
She enjoyed finding beautiful antiques at auction, gardening and in her later years began modeling appearing in local print and TV ads. But her greatest joy was her family; they were her life.
She is survived by her children Kim Elkins Hackney (Tom) and Tim Elkins (Elizabeth), Danbury, CT, two grandsons, Ethan and Ian Elkins and a sister Charlotte Jones, Culpepper, VA.
Funeral services will be 1 PM Saturday at Milward – Man O’ War with visitation beginning at 10 AM.
Burial will be in the Lexington Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Ethan Elkins, Ian Elkins, Thomas Hackney, Jim Burns, Ralph Hoskins and John Hackney.
Honorary pallbearer will be Allan “Sparky” Runk.
