LEXINGTON, Ky. - Denniston Harold E. (Mr. D) Sr. passed away Monday February 11, 2013. He was born in Cynthiana, Kentucky on June 15, 1928, the son of Fred B. Denniston and Nancy Jane Courtney Denniston. He was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force and served in the Korean War. He was a Kentucky Colonel. He worked as an insurance and automobile salesman until opening his own business, Mr. D’s Batter’s Box, which he ran for 27 years before retiring in 2010. He was involved in coaching and teaching baseball for 50 years (Castlewood Park Pony League, Northern Babe Ruth, South Lexington Connie Mack – the 1977 World Champions, Kentucky Stars, Kentucky Rockers and several others). He was very proud of the connection he had with three generations of baseball (and softball) players and coaches at every level. He will best be remembered by the untold numbers of people whose lives he touched with that rare human quality of making them feel like the most special person he knew.
He is survived by his brother Bobby (Sue) Denniston and his sister Helen Smith, both of Harrison County; his children, Harold E. “Sonny” (Dona) Denniston Jr., June (Dennis) Ridenour and Mark (Debi) Denniston, all of Lexington; seven grandchildren, Douglas, Danielle, Britney, Cody, Hannah, Scott and Heather; two great grandchildren, Kaidyn and Kennedy.
He was preceded in death by his sister Ruby Lang, two brothers J.B. Denniston and Fred Denniston Jr., and his former wife Patsy L. Denniston, all of Harrison County.
Funeral services will be held Friday February 15 at 1:30 pm at Milward – Southland with the burial to follow at the Lexington Cemetery. Pall bearers will be Doug Denniston, Cody Steele, Scott Ridenour, Brent Haynes, Chase Noble, John Miller, Joe Modica and Robbie Buchanan. Visitation will be Thursday, February 14 from 5 to 8:00pm at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass.lin
