LEXINGTON, Ky. - Charles H. Griffith, 89, husband of Gloria Thomas Griffith, passed away Feb. 22, 2013 at his home. Born July 3, 1923 in Huntington, IN, he was the son of Herschel & Ethel Griffith.
He is a WWII veteran, a Marine who served in the S. Pacific during the war. Charles, a life-long educator, received two degrees from Indiana Univ., and retired from the Univ. of KY Chemistry Dept. after 27 yrs. of service. He loved working at UK and called it his “dream job.”
He was an avid sports fan, especially of UK basketball and his beloved Chicago Cubbies. He served 30 years in the Committee of 101, ushering at countless UK football and basketball games. Charles was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Besides his wife of 63 years, he is survived by daughters Susan Griffith and Diane Barnett (Tom); grandchildren Joshua and Jessica Barnett, and twins Brandon and Chad Moore; sister Jane Harrell (Norris) of Renton, WA; brother James Griffith (Beverly) of Bellevue, NE; double cousin Rusty Griffith (Marilyn) of Sarasota, FL; and 11 nieces and 4 nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Clarence Griffith (Sue) and David Griffith (Judy). Charles’ family would like to thank the many caregivers over the past 9 years for their loving care and support.
Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Monday, Feb. 25, 2013 at Milward-Southland. The funeral will be at 1:30 PM Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013 at the funeral home, followed by internment at Lexington Cemetery.
Memorials suggested to the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association.
