LEXINGTON, Ky. - Olive Johnson McLendon, 89, wife of the late William W. McLendon, passed away on March 1, 2013. She was the daughter of the late Zachary Taylor and Sarah M. Johnson of Wilmore, Ky.
She graduated with a B.A. from Asbury College in 1943 and completed her M.A. degree in Psychology at The University of Kentucky in 1947.
She taught public school for five years before devoting her life to church work for many years.
She has been Past President of her local, district, and conference United Methodist Women as well as President of the Southeastern Jurisdiction Core Planning Group of The UMW. She was a member of the Women’s Division and General Board of Global Ministries. She has been a retreat leader and taught in Conference Schools of Christian Mission for many years. She has been Ky. Conference Director of Lay Speaking, a member of the Board of Trustees of Lake Junaluska Assembly, and President of Church Women United of Kentucky. She was a member of eleven appointed to study the program, staff and structure of The Southeastern Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church. This resulted in the present structure of The Southeastern Jurisdiction Administrative Council.
Volunteer experience has included Girl Scouts, Pink Ladies at Good Samaritan Hospital, as well as President of the Auxiliary. Additionally she was the former President of The Hospital Hospitality House, served on the Red Bird Mission Board of Directors, Henderson Settlement Board, Sue Bennett Collage Board of Directors as well as others. She has been a delegate to six World Methodist Conferences and served on the World Methodist Council from 1996-2001. She attended seven Women’s Division Assemblies, served as First Alternate Delegate to the 1988 General Conference and Delegate to the 1988 Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference.
She was married for 65 years and is survived by three daughters, Sarah (Greg) Wilson; Karen (Scott) Fitzpatrick; Cindy (Kevin) Kewin and is the grandmother of five children and great-grandmother of two.
Funeral services will be 11 AM Monday at Centenary United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the Wilmore Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 9 PM Sunday at Milward-Southland and from 10 AM until service time Monday at the church.
