LEXINGTON, Ky. - Muenks, Sandra Jean Summers, 76, widow of Phil Muenks, died Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Hospice of the Bluegrass.
She was born in Howell County, Missouri, daughter of the late Ed and Ferol Gilliam Summers.
She graduated from Washington University in St. Louis where she joined Zeta Tau Alpha and 32 years later she earned her MSW at U.K.
She had three careers, first as a full-time parent, then as a technician in the U.K. Libraries System before retiring as a mental health professional from Bluegrass Mental Health/Mental Retardation Board.
She was an active volunteer all her adult life working with civic, community and church organizations in the Lexington area since moving here in 1966.
She belonged to the Cathedral of Christ the King and Pax Christi Catholic Churches, remaining involved with groups and ministries at both parishes.
She most recently served on the boards of directors of Catholic Charities of the Lexington Diocese and of the Interfaith Alliance of the Bluegrass and as a diocesan delegate to the Kentucky Council of Churches.
She is survived by her children Beth (Joe) Doench, Marty Muenks (Bev Harp), Phyllis (Van) Inman, Carol (Terry) Anderson, Joe (Theresa) Muenks, and John (Marie) Muenks, her grandchildren Andrea (Brad) Smythe, Rupert and Isaac Medford, Katie and Kevin Muenks, Michael, Brian, and Regina Doench, Gayle (Preston) Oliver, Simone and Sarita Anderson, Lainey and Cassidy Muenks, and her great-grandsons Finn and Liam Smythe, her siblings Anne (Tom) Whipple and Jim (Becky) Summers, Phil’s sisters Peggy Van Well and Dorothy (Charles) Huelsmann plus numerous nieces and nephews.
The Rite of Christian Funeral Outside of Mass will be 12 PM Monday at Pax Christi Catholic Church with cremation to follow. Visitation will be from 5 until 9 PM Sunday at Milward – Southland.
