Francis (Frank) Edward Becker, 85, of Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Francis (Frank) Edward Becker, 85, of Lexington, Kentucky, passed away on March 18, 2013. Mr. Becker was the husband of Patricia Jean Flynn Becker. He was the son of the late Frank Charles Becker and Elizabeth Sweeney Becker. Mr. Becker was born November 3, 1927 in Pittsburgh, where he grew up and graduated in 1945 from Central Catholic High School for Boys. In 1950 he earned BS degree in mechanical engineering from Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University). His education was interrupted by service in the U.S. Army Field Artillery in 1946-47, and upon graduation received a Reserve Officer’s Commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers. Mr. Becker began his engineering career with General Electric in 1950. In 1957 he joined IBM’s Product Development Laboratory in Lexington. In 1961 Mr. Becker earned a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, under the IBM Resident Study Program. For more than thirty years, Mr. Becker was the Engineering Manager for a number of IBM product development programs. He holds patents with both GE and IBM. Before retiring from IBM in 1987, Mr. Becker was a visiting professor of engineering at Prairie View A&M University in Houston. After retiring, Mr. Becker taught undergraduate and graduate courses at the School of Technology at Eastern Kentucky University. He then taught business English in Tokyo, Japan and in central Kentucky.

Mr. Becker is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Patricia Jean Flynn Becker, and by six of their seven children, and by ten grandchildren: son Frank Thomas Becker, his son Patrick; daughter Maureen Barnett and her husband, Gary Barnett, and Maureen’s son, Ross Fancher; daughter Jean Caplin, and her late husband Bill Caplin, and their sons Brian and Eric; daughter Kathleen Schwarcz, and her husband Dr. Thomas Schwarcz, and their children, John and Elizabeth, and Kathleen’s son, Kevin Fox; daughter Eileen Becker; daughter Patricia Becker Cervenka and her husband Gordon Cervenka, and their children Adam and Casey. Mr. Becker was preceded in death by his son John, who passed away of cancer in 2001 and left behind his wife Barbara and their son Jacob.

Mr. Becker is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and special friends Larry and Betty Eisenhauer. Mr. Becker was a member of Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary Church.

Funeral services will be Thursday, 2pm at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home – Main St. with burial in the Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, 4 – 8pm at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Thomas Schwarcz, Gordon Cervenka, Gary Barnett, Patrick Becker, Ross Fancher, Brian Caplin, Kevin Fox, Eric Caplin, John Schwarcz, and Bill Smith. Honorary pallbearers are Elizabeth Schwarcz, Adam Cervenka, Casey Cervenka, Jacob Becker, and Laura Kaplan. Instead of flowers, the family requests donations to the Thomson-Hood Veterans Center and the Alzheimer’s Association.
