LEXINGTON, Ky. - C. Hoge Hockensmith, Jr., 87 a resident of Wesley VIllage in Wilmore, KY,went home to his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Born July 10,1925 and raised in Irvine, KY, Hoge proudly served in the US Navy in WW2 as a medical corpsman. After the war he majored in Law at the University of KY. He met Nora Lee Johnson there and they married in 1948. In 1950 he relinquished his goal of a career in politics and answered God’s call to preach the gospel. He started his pastoral ministry among his beloved Eastern Kentuckians in Perry County and Paintsville, Ky. His ministry took him to Ohio where he pioneered in the establishment of Southern Baptist work as a denominational leader, evangelist, and pastor of three churches. He was on the SBC Executive committee and helped draft the (1963) “Baptist Faith and Message”. In 1973 he returned to Lexington, KY to pastor Broadway Baptist Church until his retirement in 1991. He was well-known throughout the Bluegrass for his radio broadcast “Joy In the Morning”, which aired on WJMM for over 15 years. After “retirement” in 1991, his home base was in Irvine while he served multiple churches in Eastern KY as an interim pastor and preacher. During the 70s, at the invitation of the SBC mission board, he conducted evangelistic crusades on 4 continents. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Hoge will be greatly missed by Nora Lee, his loving wife of 64 years, and his children: Janette(Homer) Reeves of Greenville, SC; Charles P. Hockensmith, Sr. of Monroe Twp., NJ and Sarah(Glenn) Perry of Lexington, KY, 5 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are with Kerr Brothers on Harrodsburg Rd, visitation on Friday, April 12 4:00- 8:00 pm. Visitation also on Saturday morning from 12:30-2:30 pm with a celebration of his life at Broadway Baptist Church, 2500 Harrodsburg Rd. at 2:30 pm. Memorial contributions are suggested to International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention or Hospice of the Bluegrass.
