LEXINGTON, Ky. - Becker, Harold (Hal) Charles, 89, Lexington, passed away April 13, 2013 with his family at his side. He was born March 18, 1924 in St. Louis, MO, son of the late Charles Jacob and Estella Marie Wehmeyer Becker. He graduated from Washington University with a BS degree in Industrial Engineering. He became a First Lieutenant in Chemical Warfare Service in the Army during World War II. He was aboard ship in the Pacific when the atomic bombs were dropped and after stopping in the Philippines served in the occupational forces in Japan. He came to Lexington in 1950 with General Electric and served as office manager at the KY Glass Plant until retirement. He was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church for over fifty years where he served as Elder, Trustee, leader of forum and usher. He enjoyed trips with his family, playing bridge, working in the yard and garden and was an avid reader. For many years after retirement he volunteered during tax season to help others with filing their income taxes. He was also a volunteer with Meals-on-Wheels at Second Presbyterian Church form 1986 until February this year.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jean Hodges Becker, and his children Lawrence Becker and wife Carol, Steven Becker and Ellen Allinger and husband James “Gus” Allinger.
A private burial will be followed by a memorial service on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at 1:30 PM at Second Presbyterian Church, 460 E. Main St, Lexington, with visitation and reception to follow in the church Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donation in Hal’s name may be made to Second Presbyterian Church, Meals-on-Wheels at Second Presbyterian Church or the Salvation Army or a charity of one’s choice.
