LEXINGTON, Ky. - Thomas, James Lester (JL), 70, former police officer for LFUCG and owner of KY Fine Homes/Coldwell Banker, passed away Mon, May 6, 2013. Born in Frankfort, he was the son of Alice Wilhoite Thomas and the late James Lonnie Thomas. He served as a police officer in Lexington for 12 years, attaining the rank of Sargent and received the Officer of the Year in 1976. JL created the crime prevention unit in Lexington and served as the Associate Director for Crime Prevention for the state of KY. As owner and principle broker of KY Fine Homes, he held two locations in Lexington engaging over 70 agents. A former chief of police for Berea College, he was a private pilot, a security consultant with JIF, taught at Eastern KY University and served as a guest lecturer at various colleges and police departments across America.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his son, James Lonnie Thomas, II, Louisville; a brother, Brian (Donna) Thomas, Charlotte, NC, sisters, Lonelle (Earl) Cottrell, Lexington and Verna (Donnie) Elswick, Richmond. He was preceded in death by his brother, Eric Lee Thomas.
Services will be 11 AM Fri at Milward-Man O’ War, 1509 Trent Blvd. Burial will follow at Versailles Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 PM Thurs.
