LEXINGTON, Ky. - Barbara Rehm Cowden, the widow of William Bruce Cowden and daughter of the late Norman and Gertrude Rehm, passed away May 8, 2013. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 29, 1921. She lived in Lakeside Park, Fort Mitchell, KY in her early years. She moved with her parents to Lexington in 1936 and later graduated from the University of KY where she was active in campus life and received numerous honors and awards including sponsor of the U.K. Marching Band and Sweetheart of Sigma Chi. She was also president of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, member of Mortar Board, Phi Beta, and president of the Women’s Executive Council. She was active in the Guignol Theatre while at the University of KY and had starring roles in its productions. After college, she moved to New York City and continued her passion for acting and gained experience in early television at the Dumont Studio in New York.
In 1950, she met and later married William Cowden. After her marriage, she was a homemaker and mother of four sons, Paul, Bruce, Jay, and Roger. The remainder of her life was devoted to the interests and welfare of her husband and sons and being a positive influence in their lives.
She had been a former member of the Newman Center Board and was a U.K. Fellow. She was a former member of Idle Hour Country Club and the Lexington Club.
Ms. Cowden was predeceased by her husband, William, two of her children, Paul (Suzanne) and Jay (Sarah), and her sister Joan Hoover of Sacramento, California. She is survived by two sons, Bruce (Diana) and Roger (Barbara); six grandchildren: Kelley, Lucy, Ann, Lee, Courtney, and Clark. She is also survived by a brother, Paul Rehm (Betty) of Versailles; two nephews, Adam Hoover of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands and Joshua Hoover of Sacramento, CA; two nieces, Elizabeth Wachtel of Lexington and Martha Rehm of Orlando, Florida.
She was a member of the Cathedral of Christ the King where services will be held on Friday, May 10, 2013 at 2:30 PM with private burial at the Lexington Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 1:30 PM at the church on Friday. Memorials may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, KY Southern Indiana Chapter, P.O. Box 37008, Louisville, KY 40233-7008 and the Cathedral of Christ the King.
The family would like to express its sincere gratitude to the caregivers for Ms. Cowden, including Jenny Price, Jennifer Smith, Pam Wallace, Melinda Caswell, and Sheri Curry for their warmth, care, and kindness. Milward-Broadway is in charge of arrangement.
