LEXINGTON, Ky. - Howard Mayfield, 86, husband of Leona Cooper Mayfield, passed away Monday, May 20, 2013. Born in Hulbert, Cherokee County, Oklahoma, September 7, 1926, he was the son of the late Howard Glen and Lena Mae Thomas Mayfield. He married Leona Cooper on Thanksgiving Day 1946. H. G., as he was called by his family, was a Navy radio operator in both WW II and the Korean War. A former Technical Manager with Union Carbide Corporation, Howard was a chemist, inventor, and entrepreneur. Howard decided to follow Jesus when he was 15. Throughout his life he volunteered his gifts and talents in local churches, as teacher, leader, and servant of his Lord. In the last few years, he was a member, Sunday School teacher, and deacon of Anchor Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Howard Mayfield Jr, Berea, KY, and Jana (Andrew) Mayfield Mullen, Santa Barbara, CA; sister, Genelle (Manuel) Retamoza, Rocklin, CA; grandchildren, Phoebe Janelle and Frances Lydia Mullen.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Marvin, Wayman and Larry Mayfield.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Fri at Anchor Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Carl Peters. Burial will follow at Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 PM Thurs at Milward-Man O’ War, 1509 Trent Blvd.
