D.H. Howard, 85

butterfly2LEXINGTON, Ky. - D.H. Howard, 85, passed away on Sunday, June 2nd, at Central Baptist Hospital. He was born January 15, 1928 in Magoffin County, Ky to the late Kinner and Maude Allen Howard.

He served in World War II in the 583rd Engineering Construction group and was stationed in Sendai, Japan. After serving his country, D.H. returned home and enrolled in Morehead State College under the G.I. Bill. There he met the love of his life and wife of 62 years, Irene Stamper. He graduated in 1950 with a BS in Mathematics. Upon graduation, D.H. worked for Ashland Oil and Refining Company at their headquarters in Ashland, KY, and relocated along with the company to Lexington, KY in 1982. He worked for Ashland Oil until his retirement in 1991.

D.H. was also a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where he enjoyed his Sunday School and Bible Study Groups. He was an avid golfer and past member of Champions Golf Club and the Lexington Country Club. He also proudly volunteered for twelve years at the Veteran’s Affairs Hospital in Lexington and was a member of Do Si Do Square Dancing Club.

He is preceded in death by his son, Michael Allen Howard, and his sisters, Waunetta Howard and Minerva Lovely. He is survived by his beloved wife, Irene Howard, daughter Rebecca Howard, granddaughters Amanda Williams and Tara Barker, grandson, Michael Royce Barker, and siblings Teddy Lynn (Esknovah) Jackson, Gathel Salyer, Rosamond Lovely, and Willard (Annabelle) Howard, many nieces and nephews, and extended family.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 5th from 4-8pm at Milward –Southland, 391 Southland Drive. The funeral will proceed on Thursday, June 6th, at 11am at Milward-Southland. Burial will follow at the Lexington Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Magoffin County Scholarship Fund, c/o Salyersville National Bank, or to the Wounded Warrior Project (support.woundedwarriorproject.org). D.H. was a proud patron and a supporter of higher education, and these causes were dear to his heart.
