LEXINGTON, Ky. - Doris Wallace Poole, 83, of Lexington and Naples, FL, widow of Donald Keith Poole, Sr., passed away on Thurs., June 6, 2013 at her home in The Woodlands in Lexington. Doris was born in Long Beach, CA, on January 8, 1930, the daughter of the late Arthur and Willa Mae Howard Wallace. After growing up in Jacksonville, FL, Doris moved to Lexington in 1950 where she started her family and quickly became a part of the community, making many dear, lifelong friends and volunteering her time and energy to many causes.
Her favorite projects included Baby Health and The Bash, which benefits the Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital. Mrs. Poole and her good friends, Mary Ann (Hunter) Davis and Tassie Parker were essential in creating the Bash in 1973, after a close friend suffered a spinal cord injury. Now known as the KY Bash, it is an annual fundraising event held on the night before the first University of KY football game.
A member of Southern Hills United Methodist Church, Doris and her late husband, Don, were instrumental in financing the Poole Memorial Activities Building in 1978, which has provided activity space to church members of all ages. Doris and Don also made a major contribution to Transylvania University, which helped to build the Poole Residence Hall in 1990. Doris was a member of Idle Hour Country Club, The Keeneland Club, and the Royal Poinciana Golf Club in Naples, FL. Doris is survived by her son, Wallace Nicholson Sanders (Shelia), Cincinnati; her daughter, Gayle Elaine Sanders, Naples; step-daughters, Claire Ann Poole, Knoxville and Linda Poole Maggard, Corona del Mar, CA, and a brother, Arthur Howard Wallace, Knoxville. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Eric Simmons and Katy Simmons-Kissell (Dan); Sarah, Caroline, Nicky, Catherine, Samantha and Abigail Sanders; Stephanie Poole; Allison Poole Buckley; Jeni Harris (Billy Sheeley); Buck & Ben Maggard, and four great-grandsons, Jed & Howard Ball, and Thomas & Donald Buckley. Doris is also survived by her precious little dog, Touche, a gift from the Sanders grandchildren and her constant companion for the last five years, as well as her devoted friend and caregiver, Linda Landers. Services 11:00 am Tues. at Southern Hills United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Moore officiating. Burial Lexington Cemetery. Visitation 4-7 pm Mon. at Milward-Broadway.
