Letter to the Editor – Muhlenberg County Flooding

Letter to the Editor 01 300MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (6/9/13) – The following is a Letter to the Editor submitted by Curtis Doss of Belton Kentucky. Mr. Doss shares his thoughts on the recent flood situation.

This letter is for those who live in the Belton area or those who have been impacted by the recent flooding anywhere in the county. I have lived in the Belton area that flooded for over six years now and have lived in Belton since I was six and I have not seen such flooding until this time.

After the flooding that happened on the morning of June 6th I walked down the creek from highway 2270 to nearly the dead man’s curve area. What I saw was a large mess that needs to be addressed before more flooding such as what happened again today on the 7th happens again and again. The ditch was nearly blocked in some spots by freshly washed in trees and ditch banks. Not to mention the huge amount of trash that was piled up in places. All this has led to homes being flooded, belongings destroyed and people just having to leave home in case it got into the homes.

All of this, as money is being wasted in other parts of the county on brick sidewalks and brush being removed from train tracks. Some of this “Beautification” money should be used for something more useful than that. That includes cleaning out of the ditches in the county that flood main roads and people’s homes.

I understand that some of this money comes from different places such as the Felix Martin Foundation. I ask you, would Felix Martin want to see the citizens of his beloved Muhlenberg County lose their homes and belong to flooding while other places in the county use his donations for things that we don’t really need. I think he would be turning in his grave if he knew it.

What about the coal severance tax money that was supposed to be used to bring in new jobs if the coal industry failed? Instead of using it for the Merle Travis Center, part of this could have been used to work on flood prone areas.  Then there is: “State Representative Brent Yonts is upset over an area he says has been grossly neglected.” In this statement he is speaking about the Lake Malone area. In the same news article it is said “However, other people we spoke to who were just here enjoying the lake paint a different picture, saying they don't see any big issues.”

What about the grossly neglected state ditch right of ways that flood? Shouldn’t the people’s homes that are in threat of destruction come before the beach area at Lake Malone? I, for one, don’t see anything that is very important about how Lake Malone looks. I do on the other hand see a problem with water being in my home or a road I need to use being impassable due to high water.

Several years ago this stretch of creek that runs toward dead man's curve was cleaned out and it helped with the flooding problem. But in the past few years once again it has started flooding. So it is time for someone to once again help the citizens of this area.

If you think that something needs to be done in these areas, I ask you to write to your area Reps or call them and ask them to help. Call or write Representative Yonts and ask for his help. Call your local Magistrate, call the Judge Executive. Also call or write to the Kentucky road department and tell them of your concerns. Remember the more people who complain the better chance we have in getting something done.

Curtis Doss
