OWENSBORO, Ky. (6/17/13) – The National Civic League named the city of Owensboro one of its 10 All-America City finalists at an award ceremony Sunday night in Denver, Colo..
In a statement issued by the NCL, the All-America City award, started in 1949, has been presented to “more than 650 communities for addressing local challenges with innovative, grassroots strategies that promote civic engagement and cooperation between the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.”
Over the past weekend (June 14-16), civic leaders and community volunteers attended the three day NCL conference in Denver, where those in contention for one of the 10 awards also had the opportunity to make their case for why their city should be one of the chosen.
NCL is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that strengthens democracy by increasing the capacity of groups and individuals to participate in and build healthy and prosperous communities. NCL publishes the Model City Charter and the National Civic Review, and conducts programs, research and technical assistance on topics like fiscal sustainability, transportation-oriented development, environmental stewardship, racial equity and immigrant integration.
