LEXINGTON, Ky. - Robert Anthony Beargie , 84, husband of the late Catherine Agnes Beargie, passed away on June 26. He is survived by his four children, Sarah Agnes Wilkinson, Robert Anthony Beargie, Jr. (Wendi Michelle), Amy Elizabeth Beargie, and Katherine Ann Beargie, as well as six grandchildren, Charles Evans Wilkinson, Jr. (Catherine Clare), Sarah Brooke, Katherine Marie, Mary Elizabeth, James Robert, and Michael Anthony Beargie. In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his son, James Clair Beargie, his sister Joan Clare Nesteruk, and his brother William Thomas Beargie.
Robert was born on August 17, 1928 in Cleveland, OH to Evelyn Van Rooy Beargie and Clair Proxidus Beargie. He was a graduate of St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, OH and John Carroll University in Cleveland, OH, double-majoring in Biology and Chemistry. He attended Medical School and received his M.D. from Ohio State University after serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Robert completed his residency at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center in Oklahoma City and moved to Lexington in 1965 to work at the University of Ky Medical Center in Neonatology and Pediatrics where his specialty was neonatal care. After a sabbatical to Guatemala where he worked at the National Institute of Health and Medicine in Guatemala City, and at a mission medical clinic in the village of Santa Maria Cauque from 1972-1973, Robert worked for the University of Ky Student Health Service until his retirement in 1997. Robert was a Eucharistic Minister and member of The Cathedral of Christ the King Parish in Lexington. A
man of deep faith, for many years he distributed Holy Communion and prayed with the sick, homebound, shut-ins, and assisted living residents on a regular basis until the end of this past year.
Funeral mass will be Monday, July 1 at 11am at Christ the King Cathedral with burial following at Calvary Cemetery in Lexington. Visitation will be held from 10am to 11am prior to the funeral mass. Milward-Broadway is in charge of arrangements.
