LEXINGTON, Ky. - Ruby Adams Griggs passed away July 18, 2013, after a 13-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born on July 31, 1923 on Furnace Mountain, in Powell County, Ky, to the late Sadie and DeCorsey Adams. She was the beloved wife, of 65 years, to Vernon W. Griggs and mother to Donna Sue Westerman and Autum Louise (Ned) Byers. She taught Sunday school at Macedonia Christian Church for 40 years to first and second graders. Ruby was the owner of Antique Mall at Todd’s Square, in Lexington, for many years. She and Vernon traveled into 49 states and several foreign countries to buy inventory for her business. At the time of her death, she was a member of Athens Christian Church.
Ruby had five grandchildren, Christopher (Alicia) Westerman, Heather Westerman-Ganidello, her “Angel girl,” Shawn (Jocelyn) Westerman, Brett (Brooke) Byers, and Summer Joy Byers, her “July fly.” She also leaves seven great-grandchildren, Mila Westerman, Gwenn Ganidello, Noah, Andrew, and Benjamin Westerman and Lily and Charlie Westerman.
Ruby is also survived by her husband, sisters, Opal Venable, Stanley (Eugene) Horton, and Mattie Justice and brother Johney (Juanita) Adams, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Her sister, Marie Lewis, preceded her in death.
Visitation will be Sunday, July 21, 2013, from 4-8 at Kerr Brother Funeral Home, Main Street. Memorial services will be at 2:00 on Monday, July 22, 2013, with Ned Byers and Charles Lees officiating. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and a very special nephew, Frankie Justice, the mayor of Pikeville.
