Howard A. Dickey, Jr., 82

blueskyLEXINGTON, Ky. - Howard A. Dickey, Jr., 82, husband of 45 years to Carol Ann Dickey, passed away Wed. July 24, 2013 at his residence in Versailles, KY. Born Aug. 8, 1930 in Detroit, MI, he was the son of the late Howard A. Dickey, Sr. and Margaret Eloise Salyers Dickey. Mr. Dickey was a graduate of Detroit County Day School and received his BA from the University of Ky at the age of 79. He served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was assigned to the Military Police 1950-1954. In 1960, Mr. Dickey was the Republican nominee for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Mr. Dickey was a Saddlebred Horse Trainer for many years and was later employed by the Ky Cabinet of Corrections as a food service administrator for Blackburn Correctional Complex. After retiring from Blackburn, he taught at the Ky Methodist Home for Children. Mr. Dickey was a member of the Versailles Presbyterian Church and was affiliated with several organizations including: The Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion, a Past President of Ky Young Republicans, the University of Ky Alumni Association, the Honorable Order of Ky Colonels, and a member of the Site Selection Committee for the Ky Horse Park.

Survivors other than his wife include his children, Margaret Dickey, Louisville, KY, Howard A. Dickey, III, Lexington, KY, Bradley Dickey, Southaven, MS, and Elizabeth Dickey Grimes, Raleigh, NC; eight grandchildren, Rachel Dickey, Katie Haagen, Christopher Dickey, Zach Dickey, Sarah Beth Dickey, Keltin Grimes, Camarian Hill, and Kyra Grimes.

Funeral services will be held 11 am Mon. at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd. by Rev. Melissa Sevier. Burial will follow in Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-6 pm Sun. at the funeral home and 10 am Mon. until the service time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, ATTN: Gift Processing, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301 or Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Dr., Lexington, KY 40504.
