LEXINGTON, Ky. - Nettie M. Wheeler Lawson, 81, widow of James “Alfred” Lawson, Sr., passed away on Monday, July 29, 2013, after attending the 61st annual Wheeler family reunion, where she was so happy to see everyone and felt better than she had felt in months which was a true gift to her family. Nettie loved her family and friends, and she never missed the opportunity to party with them. A former member of Ashland Avenue Baptist Church, she is a current member of Porter Memorial Baptist Church. She earned a business degree from Ky Business College after raising her children and worked for many years in the cafeterias of Morton Middle School and Jessie Clark Middle School.
Her children, Virginia “Ginny” Lawson (George Weick), Judy Thompson (Wayne), James A. Lawson, Jr. (Becky), Sandy Wilfong (Tim), and Steve Lawson (fiance Bethany Hamilton), appreciate everything she did for them. Grandchildren, James Eli Lawson (Evelyn), Emily Lawson, Hannah Spencer (friend Justin LaRosa), Jeremiah Wilfong, Heather Wade, Andrea Richardson (Paul), and Nathan Thompson (friend Brooke Taylor), will miss her dearly. Nettie cherished her great grandchildren, Aubrey Lawson, Addison Lawson, Dalton Wade, Jaylen Richardson, Xavier Richardson, and Zya Richardson. She held a special place in her heart for James O. Lawson, Jr.
Her son-in-law, Farley Spencer, predeceased her.
She was the daughter of Luther Wheeler and Esta Mae Garrett Wheeler of Casey County. Siblings, Bill Wheeler, Wavy Barnes, Coy Wheeler, Edith Montgomery, Louise House, Kenneth Wheeler, and Betty Courtney, predeceased her. Iva Brown, Shirley King, Ray Wheeler, and Sue Burkhard survive. Many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins will miss her. Her two very dear friends, Barbara Kite and Mira Grabundzija, were always there for her. Nettie’s best friend and toy poodle, Shellie, was her constant companion. The family thanks the residents and staff of Hartland Hills who welcomed her with open arms and made her feel at home.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons and nephews. Contributions in her honor may be made to the Bluegrass Chapter American Red Cross or the ASPCA. Milward-Southland is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be Friday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. with services at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, interment at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
