LEXINGTON, Ky. - Roy H. Mays, Jr., 91, received and accepted his homecoming invitation on August 9, 2013. To receive him was his wife of 59 years, Thelma Thompson Mays, his son of 54 years Roy H. Mays III, his sister Maxine (Howard) Hanks, his mother and father Roy H. (Rachel Elrod) Mays Sr. as well as numerous friends and a host of witnesses. He left a strong legacy of faith for his family to follow.
Still awaiting an invitation are his son Kent (Cheryl) Mays and daughter-in-law Beth Mays; grandchildren Casey (Lauren), Amanda (Todd), Ryan, Kirk (Robyn), Kelsey (Justin) as well as great-grandchildren Kennady, Allen Mays, Annabeth, Blanding, Carver and baby boy Gaffney and his sister and brother in law, Dixie and Bob Gerding and family.
He was born in 1922 in Casey County, KY. A lifelong Lexingtonian, he graduated from Maxwell Elementary, Lexington Junior, and Henry Clay High School, enlisting in the US Army Air Corps in 1942. As Staff Sergeant, he served during World War II as radio operator and navigator.
A charter member of Southland Christian Church, he taught Sunday School for 37 years serving as Elder, Deacon and Elder Emeritus. President of both the Southern Little League and Dixie Babe Ruth in Lexington, he was a founding member of UK's Fellowship of Christian Athletes and loved investing in the lives of his community’s youth.
He worked for Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company and retired from Don Jacobs Oldsmobile having enjoyed the Deep Six fishing and golfing trips, his colleagues and all the many customers he retained as friends. Mr. Mays was a Freemason member for 43 years serving as Master of Masonic Lodge #1 in 1975.
