LEXINGTON, Ky. - James D. Akers, 72, husband of Rebecca Grubbs Akers, passed away Tues. Aug. 13, 2013 at St. Joseph Hospital. Born Dec. 6, 1940 in Dayton, OH, he was the son of the late Robert and Ruth Lantz Akers. Mr. Akers was a graduate of The Ohio State University where he played JV basketball, and was a retired pharmacist for St. Joseph Hospital. He enjoyed playing the trumpet and was a fan of Big Band Jazz. Mr. Akers was affiliated with Twin Pines Christian Church.
Survivors other than his wife include two daughters, Laura (Fred) Fields, Lawrenceburg, KY, and Nicole (Michael) Garlin, Nicholasville, KY; one son, Aaron Akers, Winchester, KY; five grandchildren, Megan, Jill and Kaleb Akers, Alex and Zach Garlin; one brother, Jon (Lyn) Akers; and two nephews, Rob and David Akers.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Nancy Hart Akers.
Funeral services will be held 2:30 pm Sat. at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd. by Rev. Bennie Braddick. Burial will follow in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 5-8 pm Fri. at the funeral home.
