LEXINGTON, Ky. - Rev. Ralph S. Carpenter was born in Montclair, New Jersey, December 29, 1925. He was a graduate of Montclair public schools and Princeton University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received graduate degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary and Union Seminary in New York. His career centered in hospital chaplaincies in New Jersey, Virginia, and, for 26 years, at the University of KY Medical Center. As a supervisor of Clinical Pastoral Education, Rev. Carpenter helped educate hundreds of theological students and clergy. He was a long-term member of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, the Association of Professional Chaplains, and the American Association of Pastoral Counselors. In retirement, he served several Episcopal Churches, especially St. Patrick’s in Somerset, KY. He rekindled his love of foreign languages by earning a master’s degree in classical languages at the University of KY. He was also a long-time participant in 12-step recovery programs.
Rev. Carpenter was married to Gail V. Carpenter, who survives him. He was the father of Stephen Carpenter of Pennsylvania and David Carpenter (Marisol) of Washington, D.C. He was the stepfather of Greg Andrews (Kathleen) of Indianapolis, IN, and Steven Andrews (Julia) of Los Altos, CA. Greg and Steve are the parents of five children. Rev. Carpenter’s sister, Jane Carpenter, and his brother, Stewart Carpenter, preceded him in death. Memorial service will be 2 PM on Monday at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church officiated by Bishop Doug Hahn and Reverend Laurie Brock. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass.
