LEXINGTON, Ky. - Joan Lewis Boone passed away on September 19. She was born in Morehead, KY to the late Beulah Murphy of Morehead, KY. Her brother Newton and sister Wanda passed away years ago. She is survived by her youngest sister Donna. She was married to Lexington attorney Wheeler 'Bunny' Boone for 37 years only parting with his death in 2001. She and Bunny were devoted to each other and traveled all over the world and raised 7 children together. After Bunny retired they moved to Stuart, Florida where they lived for 15 years. While there, Joan was active in many civic affairs, volunteering for the Red Cross, The Council on Aging, Martin County Memorial Hospital, and Meals on Wheels. Always giving of herself, for her many years of service to the community she received recognition as the Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award from the National Society of Fundraising Executives – Treasure Coast Chapter in 1998. Joan moved back to Lexington after Bunny passed away to be with family and re-connected with Ky Alpha Masters Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and was at former member of the Women’s Club of Central Ky . Earlier this year Joan was recognized as 'Girl of the Year’ by Beta Sigma Phi and served as president of Alpha Chapter this year. During the past few years she continued to be active in club and sorority events, appearing in style shows, taking on leadership roles, and organizing events.
Joan lived life to the fullest and obtained her pilot’s license in the early sixties while taking lessons from Tag Veal who was a Lexington area radio personality at the time. She loved to sing and appeared in several musicals at Breckinridge Teachers College in Morehead. Family and friends alike remember fondly how she accompanied Bunny while he played the harp every Christmas and Thanksgiving, singing old favorites like ‘In the Garden’, ‘Blue Heaven’, and ‘The Second Time Around’. Joan loved to jitterbug to 50’s rock-n-roll, especially Elvis Presley. Joan had many friends wherever she lived but her two best friends were Charlie and Corky, two of the best dogs anyone could know. A gracious and elegant hostess, Joan treated friends and family to Derby Parties, Couples Club dinners, Card Nights, Holiday dinners and quiet cookouts all served with warmth and attention to detail. She and Bunny loved a house full of people.
Joan attended Morehead State College and was engaged and curious about the world her whole life. Joan loved to read, especially true crime and biographies and her home was full of books. Her favorite way to relax was to sit in the sun with a thick novel. Joan was a devoted mother, mother in law, and stepmother to Carolyn Crow, Bevery Marye, Sherry Price, Dianne Boone & Steve Fields, Jon Scott Bain, Laura (Jodi) & Edward Pramuk, and Wheeler (Chip) Boone Jr. She was a grandmother extraordinaire to Gary (Sonny) Price, Nick Harris- Boone, Caitlyn Harris- Boone, Aaron Pramuk, Faith Pramuk, Christina Hazlett, Natalie Marye, Tammy Obrecht, and Hugh Crow
All of those who knew her and loved her will miss her and her gorgeous smile dearly. Joan will be interred in Lexington Cemetery next to her beloved Bunny on Tuesday.
The Funeral will take place at noon at Kerr Bros. Funeral Home – Main Street with Graveside Services immediately following at Lexington Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 pm on Monday at Kerr the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Lexington or Meals on Wheels.
