LEXINGTON, Ky. - Charles Dover Rhodes, Jr., 91, passed away Monday, October 28, 2013. He was born in Paducah, KY, son of the late Charles D. and Ethel G. Rhodes.
He was a graduate of Kemper Military Academy in Missouri, attended Northwestern University, Transylvania and the University of Ky before serving in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946. He attained the rank of First Lieutenant and received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.
He returned to Lexington as owner of Baynham’s Shoe Co and later joined Prudential A. S. de Movellan Real Estate until his retirement. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Idle Hour Country Club and a former member of the Lexington Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Baynham Rhodes and a daughter, Jane Rhodes Justice.
He is survived by a daughter Leslie Baynham Rhodes, Lexington and a son, Charles Dover Rhodes, III, Hanover, PA. Also surviving is a grandson, Craig Bogert (Emily) Baldwin, Jr., Sandpoint, ID; granddaughters, Elizabeth Baldwin (Patrick) Justice, Leslie Wilson (Joe) Miller, both of Lexington and Jenny Wilson (John) Trey, Danville; a great grandson, James Leon-Baldwin, Sandpoint, ID.
The family wishes to thank Robin and Terry Gillum, Rocky Gillum, Terry Dean Gillum, Rita Pate and Mike Rutoskey for the devotion, care and love they have given to Charles during the last few years of his life.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Lexington Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Daniel Hans officiating.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at Milward – Broadway.
