Henderson County High School 300HENDERSON, Ky. (9/27/13) – The Henderson County High School Agriculture Department is working with the second grade students who will visit the Henderson County High School Pumpkin Patch now through Oct. 4 at Henderson County High School. Students will visit from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. or noon to 2:00 p.m. each day. HCHS Agriculture Department staff members collaborated with elementary teachers to develop a plan for each grade level. When students arrive they will take a brief tour of the Pumpkin Patch, and the safety guidelines will be reinforced. HCHS students developed educational material that will be available to teachers prior to their visits.
 
Fall on the Farm is an agriculture literacy program which the Future Farmers of America initiated for the youth in the community. This program is possible due to a grant from the Richard and Willa Crafton Family Foundation at Blue Grass Community Foundation. The second grade students will be involved with several activities to help them learn aspects of agriculture. These activities will include a stationary dairy cow so students may learn about the milking process. Students will also take a trip to the potting shed where they will plant a seed and learn the proper care of plants. At this station they will also learn the life cycle of a pumpkin. Students will participate in a scavenger hunt where they will help a farmer get all his animals back into the barn safely. Additional math and literacy activities are included in the program.
