thumbpicker1 300MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (5/14/13) – Although it's still a few months away, final plans are being worked out for this year's National Thumbpickers Hall of Fame Weekend, coming to the Merle Travis Music Center in Powderly September 27th through 29th.

However, Joe Clark, Executive Director of the National Thumbpickers Hall of Fame, says there are lots of great picking events before the big awards weekend.

"One event we have on the 2nd Saturday of each month is 'The Home of the Legends Jamboree. It's an informal monthly honor to some of the area legends like Mose Rager, who was from Drakesboro. (Rager is credited with teaching Chet Atkins, Merle Travis and hundreds of others his unique style of picking.) We have open mic, it's a free event, just a very small family type environment, to come listen to the music, much like a day of sitting on the porch listening to someone pick. It's held at the Drakesboro Community Center, right next door to the city fire department on Highway 176,” said Clark

"June 15th we'll have Odell Martin Day at the Martin Homeplace in Allegre," Clark added. "This all day event celebrates the picking of another fine Western Kentucky guitar legend. Odell was a great thumbpicker. That's an event that Freddie Russell and some of our friends in Todd County put together." Clark explained. "Martin played on the Grand Ole Opry, wrote songs for Chet Adkins, and played back-up for Jim Reeves when Reeves performed the first country music show to be held in Carnegie Hall in New York. There will be cooking on the grill again so food or drinks are available."

Clark also noted that the Annual Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Convention will take place July 10th through the 13th at the Sheraton Music City Hotel in Nashville. Phone 615-885-2200 for details.

The National Thumbpickers Hall of Fame will induct a new honoree when pickers from around the country join in the fun September 27th through the 29th at the Merle Travis Music Center in Powderly.

Clark told SurfKY News "we'll have our Hall of Fame induction ceremony. So the great part is that the audience never knows who is going to be inducted. Whoever that performer is will give a bit of a concert to celebrate, along with others backing him or her up. Saturday, September 28th at 10am we'll choose the Thumbpicker of the Year, Fan of the Year, and we honor a living picker along with remembering someone who is deceased. The great part about this awards event is we've had finalists and winners from Australia, Japan, from Canada, you name it. Gretch Guitar Company will be giving away a really nice guitar to the winner, along with one for those 17 and under. Gretch has helped us push this event to the next level. Saturday, an extra special tribute will take place, although details cannot be released at this time. We really don't know who'll be there. Let’s just say it's really going to be well worth the price of admission. Those who have attended for the first time have really been surprised at the level of talent they see at all these events." Clark added.

The Merle Travis Music Center is adjacent to the Paradise Park in Powderly, KY.
