golf1 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (7/8/13) --The Greater Owensboro Junior Golf program will host its eighth annual series championship July 15 in Owensboro and July 22 in Hopkinsville.

The series began eight years ago with eight regional events. The series had a goal of more opportunities for competitive golfers at the junior level, said Mark Price, director and golf coach at Daviess County High School.

The series, which has since grown to 16 events, started in early June and split off into two tours based on the Owensboro and Hopkinsville regions. The two tours are further divided into a total of six groups based on age groups ranging from 8 to 18, but players may move up one division based on playing experience. The number of holes will also be based on age group.

“It’s what makes our series somewhat unique,” Price said. “Everything is based on age and ability.”

The younger age groups will have an eight-stroke maximum, so if they have a bad hole, they can move to the next one, Price said. The older age groups may be trying to make their high school golf teams, so they will be facing a more challenging game.

“It meets the needs of the player where they are, and caters to each golfer,” said Price.

The series is based on a point system throughout the year, and the golfers with the most points at the end will win. Prizes include plaques, trophies, and medals for the younger golfers; and gift cards for gas and entertainment for the older kids. Still, winning can be its own thrill.

“There’s just something about winning that is important,” Price said. “It’s not about the prizes at this age. They win to win.”

The Owensboro series championship will be held July 15 at the Summit Country Club. The Hopkinsville series championship will be held July 22 at the Hopkinsville Country Club.
