(7/31/13) -- Diane Schindler, Food Service Manager of Owensboro Middle School, was recognized at the board meeting Thursday, July 25, for receiving the 2012-2013 Louise Sublette award on June 18 from the Kentucky School Nutrition Association in Lexington. She also represented Kentucky at the School Nutrition Annual National Conference July 13 through 17 in Kansas City, MO. This is reportedly the third time Schindler has received the prestigious award, she also won in 1992 and 2005. Schindler has served lunch to 700 students and staff daily for 20 years, according to information provided by the Owensboro Public School district.

Another item of business involved appointments to the board. Nick Brake was appointed as board secretary for 2013 after the retirement of Dr. Larry Vick on June 30. Paula Roberts was appointed board treasurer after the resignation of Lynn Holland on April 15, it was reported.

Treasurer Paula Roberts reportedly told the board that at the end of July 2013, the Owensboro Public School’s cash and investment balance was $15,236,823.61. It was reported that there was $11,676,110.23 in receipts and $12,518,228.99 in disbursements.

Opening day for teachers will be Tuesday, Aug. 7, and will have an “Opening Day Celebration.” The first day for students is Wednesday, Aug. 7.

The next board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 22, at 6 p.m. following a tax rate public hearing at 5:45 p.m. at the central office.
