(9/26/13) – Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

West Kentucky Community and Technical College will commemorate the month with its seventh annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration on October 2.

The celebration, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 11:00 a.m.- noon in the WKCTC Student Center with live entertainment and tastings of authentic Hispanic food.

The main event will be the viewing of the trailer for the Academy Award winning documentary, “Inocente” - the story of a 15-year-old Hispanic girl who has refused to let her dream of becoming an artist be defined by her life as an undocumented immigrant forced to live homeless for nine years of her young life. Inocente survived and overcame her circumstances with her passion and talent for art.
 
“This is just a preview of what is to come,” said Carolyn Perry, WKCTC Spanish professor and Hispanic Heritage Celebration coordinator. “Inocente herself will visit our campus next year on April 8-9, and our students, faculty and staff and community are invited to come a meet this incredible young women whose life story will inspire and motivate everyone who hears it.”

“Inocente” was also a national and international winner in the San Antonio, Heartland, Arizona, Docs International, Flagstaff Mountain, and Melbourne International film festivals, as well as the Unicef Special EBS International Documentary Festival and Awareness Fest.
