Scoping It Out: Some Things You Just Can’t Plan

taylor rileyOWENSBORO, Ky. (11/21/13) - I’ve always been a planner. I have a schedule in my head, in my agenda and on my phone. I guess you could call it a control problem, but I would call it being prepared.

I plan down to the minute of my day. This is when I eat, this is when I have to be at work (usually a 15-minute window because I am always late-see previous story), this is when I go to the gym, and this is when I go to sleep. I even plan out when I have time to make a phone call with my dad or one of my best friends who lives 600 miles away. Planning makes me feel great. When I finally get to cross events off my mental list, it’s a rush of accomplishment.

But even the planners, like me, sometimes get stuck in spontaneous situations.

Fate brings you the friends, who are not planners. Everyone has the friend who cancels plans. This is my biggest pet peeve. Make a plan and stick to it! If you know you don’t want to go to something or you have something else you would rather do, tell me. Don’t make plans and then an hour before, while I’m straightening my hair, tell me you can’t go. I didn’t get out of bed to straighten my hair!

The planner can’t expect the big life change. I always planned on moving to New York City out of college to be a journalist. Finances and opportunity prevented me from doing that right out of school, so I thought I would just slum it at my parents’ house for a couple months until I found something I could use my $60,000 piece of paper for. Then I received a call for an interview in Owensboro. I got the job and moved here. I had never even been on this side of the state, let alone knew where Owensboro was, but soon enough I was here. You have to take a risk to receive a reward.

Hardships can’t always be expected. Whether it’s a breakup or the loss of a loved one, you don’t always know when it’s going to happen. Living your daily life on a schedule is good for organization, but things happen all the time that can affect your life in positive and negative ways, and you have to be able to deal with it.

And, sometimes, it can be as small as a miscalled forecast. You can plan to keep an umbrella in your car for a future rainy day, but when you are walking to your car and you feel that first raindrop, then another, then thousands, it serves no purpose. It makes me wonder if planning even serves a purpose. There are things that you can plan like spring break, and things you can‘t plan, like falling in love, but what it comes down to is how you are able to adapt to those things. You may have to run to get out of an unexpected downpour, but you’ll be under shelter soon enough.
