Owensboro Police Department Looks to Make Schools Safer with Proactive Program

adoptaschool 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (12/18/13) — Schools used to be one of the safest places to be, but now they may be one of the most dangerous. With news of shootings and bomb threats everyday across America, you have to wonder: how safe are your kids from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.?

The Owensboro Police Department wants to soothe your worries. OPD is implementing the Adopt-a-School Program in Owensboro area schools. The program is an effort to promote safety within the city schools and also to have a greater law enforcement presence and deter crime, according to a press release.

The officers assigned to each school will learn the schools layouts and lockdown procedures to ensure better responses, but to also be proactive rather than reactive, according to Lt. Col. Jeff Speed, program director.

"We are starting this program to enhance the job we do," said Speed at Tuesdays Daviess County Public Schools Board of Education Meeting. "It’s about working smart."

Speed also said that the program is intended to have the assigned officers become leaders in the schools. He wants the officers to have positive interactions with the students so that they can become mentors. The officers will spend four times a week at the school, eating lunch, and being present at drop off and pick up times.

It goes above and beyond school safety in our minds, said Speed. We have children, and we are passionate about children.

The Daviess County Public Schools are also reaping the benefits of the program at two of their city schools, Tamarack Elementary and Daviess County Middle School.

“I’m thrilled about the collaborative nature and spirit (of this program)”, said DCPS Superintendent Owens Saylor.

The program is to begin at the start of the new year, according to Speed. For more information about this program, contact the Owensboro Police Department at: (270) 929-0873.
