PADUCAH, KY - Thomas A. Sutherland, 71, of Paducah, KY passed away at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at the Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Paducah.
Thomas was born October 24, 1940 in Owensboro, Kentucky to Adron C. and Ruth M. Christian Sutherland. He attended Lincoln grade Schools in the Seven Hills district of Owensboro and then went to Owensboro High School. He join the Army in the late 1950’s and served six months at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri and one year at Ft. Chaffee, Arkansas. After returning from the service he enrolled at Kentucky Wesleyan college where he pursued a degree in library science. After graduation he enrolled in the Master of Library Science school at the university of Kentucky. His first job was with the Department of libraries in Frankfort, Kentucky from 1965-1968. He then was hired in 1968 as the director of the Paducah-McCracken County public Library where he worked until retirement in 1995. Thomas was an accomplished artist and has may paintings throughout Kentucky and he was also a restoration artist having restored many old paintings. Thomas was a very skilled woodworker having built several pieces of furniture and restoring and refinishing furniture. He was a Member of the Kentucky adviser Council on Libraries 1971-1973. He was the recipient of the Trustees award of the Kentucky Library Association in 1979. He was a member of the American Library Association, and a book reviewer for the library Journal in 1971. He was the Executive Director of the Kentucky Library association 1971-1990. He was also a Phi Delta Theta and a Rotarian . He was a member of the Broadway United Methodist Church.
Thomas is survived by Gayle Moss Sutherland of Paducah, KY; daughters, Ginna Ruth Matthews and husband Ken of Milwaukee, WI, Katherine Moss Woods and husband Bryan of Atlanta, GA; son, Todd Allen Sutherland of Houston, TX; brother Robert N. Sutherland of Athens, GA; grandchildren, Lindsay Matthews, Ken Matthews, Sydney Matthews, Camila Sutherland, Daniela Sutherland and several nieces.
Memorial visitation will be 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2012 at the Milner and Orr Funeral Home.
