HOPKINS COUNTY, KY - Arna Rose Oates, 92 of Madisonville, KY formerly of Graham, KY died at 2:20 pm on April 15, 2012 in the Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Oates was born February 3, 1920, in Muhlenberg County to Mattie Rolley Rose and Willie Rose. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church for more than 80 years. She was a member of the 1938 graduating class of Graham High School. She was founding member of the Yeargins Homemakers Club for 50 years. She loved to garden, cook and sew for the family. She enjoyed quilting and basket making and generously shared these with her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Birkley Oates who died in 1980 and her son William Edward Oates who died in 2008. She was also preceded in death by her sisters Norma Whitfield and Leona Bard and sisters Lois Thomas and Rebecca Hill.
She is survived by her children Russell (Phyllis) Oates and Retha Jeanie Barnett and daughter in law Nancy Oates. She is also survived by her sister Ruthie Vincent and brother Bob (Dorothy) Rose. She has 5 grandchildren—Kara (Tim) Patterson, Nathan (Jennifer) Barnett, Russ (Adna) Oates, Heather (Steven) Wheeler and Kate (Dustin) Smucker and 3 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm and from 10:00-11:00 before the service at the church.
Funeral services are at 11:00 am on Thursday, April 19, 2012 pm at Unity Baptist Church with Brother Danny Fireline, Dr. Joe Leonard and Reverend Richard Browning officiating. Burial will be in the Unity Cemetery near Graham, KY beside her husband.
Pall bearers will be Tim Patterson, Steven Wheeler, Dustin Smucker, Nathan Barnett, Russ Oates and Jerry Oates.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Unity Baptist Church or Unity Cemetery. Envelopes will be available at Gary's Funeral Home.
