OWENSBORO, KY - Carroll Parish Callender, 86, of Owensboro, formerly of Greenville, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 5:25 p.m. in the Hermitage Care and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born on March 5, 1926 in Hanson, the son of Carroll Cook Callender and Bessie Mae Parish Callender. He was an Air Force Veteran of World War II and a deacon at First Baptist Church in Greenville for 34 years, where he taught Sunday school. He was a graduate of Georgetown College. He played basketball and baseball for Georgetown College and was the baseball player coach his senior year. He coached Little League and American Legion baseball in Greenville. He was a teacher and coached basketball in Kentucky and Missouri. He was a lifetime member of the VFW in Greenville and served as a Greenville School Board member. He was a member of Civitan Club and was a Kentucky Colonel. He retired in 1984 from Amax Coal Company as the chief payroll clerk after 27 years. He loved golf, UK sports, and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jack Callender; sister-in-law, Doris Callender; and nephew, Steve Callender.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Charlene S. Callender of Owensboro; one daughter, Cindy (Dr. Anthony) Durall of Owensboro; two granddaughters, Emmy Durall and Sarah (Roger) Dotsey; and one nephew, David Callender.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville, with Dr. Charles Midkiff and Dr. Greg Faulls. Burial is at the Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville.
