BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Rodney Cordell Martin was born in Greenville, KY the son of Velma and Howitt Martin. He attended Muhlenberg County Schools through 1981 when the family moved to Georgetown, KY where he completed his primary and secondary education in Scott County Schools. He was a member of Wesley Chapel AME Zion Church (Greenville) and Great Crossing Missionary Baptist Church (Georgetown) where he was baptized.
He was preceded in death by his mother (Velma Hodge Martin), paternal Grandmother (Beatrice Martin), paternal Grandfather (Herbert Martin), and maternal Grandfather (James Hodge) as well as several Aunts and Uncles.
Rodney is survived by father Howitt C. Martin of Bowling Green, KY, brother Brian (Marchale) of Fishers, Indiana, and sister Dana (Dedric) McGhee of Bartlett, Tennessee and their families, maternal Grandmother Dorothy Hodge (Louisville), and a host of loving Uncles, Aunts, and cousins.
He was a fun loving Uncle to Brian James and John Mitchell Martin as well as Morgan, Madelyn, and Makenna McGhee. Rodney was a special cousin and friend to a host of relatives including Melody McIntosh (Springfield, OH), Van Hodge, Jr. (Louisville), Tracie Hines Steele (Louisville) and numerous other cousins and friends made through his scholastic and career endeavors.
In High School, Rodney was a member of the track team, played the trumpet and baritone, and was an officer in Student Government Association. After High School, Rodney followed his interest and love of clothing to work for retail clothiers after his graduation from Scott County in 1986 including Structure, Warner Brothers Studio Store, and Pottery Barn in Atlanta, GA and Miami, FL from 1991 to 2000.
At the urging of his Mother, Rodney returned to KY and enrolled at the University of KY where he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 2008. During this time he worked at Banana Republic and LexArts in Lexington, Ky. He completed an internship in his field with Elder Outreach in Lexington in 2007 and he worked for the Bluegrass Regional Mental Health/Mental Retardation Board through 2008.
In August 2008, Rodney moved to Bowling Green to begin his Masters program in Psychology. Given the family’s Western KY University tradition and his Father residing in Bowling Green, WKU was the perfect location for Rodney to begin his graduate studies. Rodney completed his degree in 2010. While in Bowling Green, Rodney worked for WKU Career Services, WKU Psychology Clinic, and WKU Counseling/Testing Center. He also worked for Pier One and Bowling Green/Warren County Community Education where he served the after school needs of many children.
Quick to come to the assistance of someone in need, Rodney's smile and laughter brightened the lives of friends and admirers alike. His love for people greatly impacted the lives of all of his friends and family members. We miss you dearly, Rodney!
Visitation will be on February 2, 2013 from 10:00AM - 12:00PM at Burnam & Son Mortuary, Inc.
Funeral will take place at Reynolds Cemetery following.
