Florene Scott Griffin, 97, formerly of Central City, KY

MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. - Florene Scott Griffin, 97, formerly of Central City, KY passed away Friday, February 1, 2013 at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Owensboro. She was born in Nashville, TN on July 18, 1915, the daughter of the late Charles Leslie and Flora Corbitt Scott. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence LeRoy Griffin, her sisters Dorothy Scott Shutt, Margaret Scott Baggett, and Virginia Scott Brown, and her brother, Charles Leslie Scott, Jr.

Mrs. Griffin, or Flo as she was called by family and friends, had lived in Central City since the 1940's. Initially, she worked as a bookkeeper for the Coca-Cola Company in Central City. Later, she and her husband, Griff, purchased Sanitary Cleaners which they operated until their retirement in 1981.

Flo was a member of First United Methodist Church of Central City, where she served on many church committees and boards, and taught Sunday school classes. She also participated in the Women's Society of Christian Service, later United Methodist Women, and held positions in the women's organizations of the United Methodist Church at the Conference level.

Flo belonged to various community civic and service organizations and worked closely with senior citizens groups, including the ABC Club, in Central City. She was an avid golfer for many years and enjoyed participating in golf tournaments and took great pride in winning several trophies. She and Griff also loved playing Bridge and she was a member of several Bridge groups in Central City. Flo enjoyed playing board games and word games with her family and friends. After their retirement, Flo and Griff moved to the Courtyard in Central City where she continued to organize and participate in senior activities and games.

Survivors include two sisters, Nancy Scott Green and Jean Scott Jackson of Winchester, TN, her niece, Margaret Baggett Britton (Joe) of Owensboro, and her grandniece, Margaret Britton Patchett (Jeff), Kannapolis, NC, and grandnephew, Scott Britton, Owensboro, whom she considered her grandchildren.

Other survivors are nieces, Dorothy Anne Shutt Huddleston, Nashville, TN, Linda Brown Childs (Lee), Woodstock, IL, Kathy Brown Douglas (Tommy), Chattanooga, TN, Penny Jackson Morris (Robbie), Estill Springs, TN, and Ann Jackson Solomon (Tim), Winchester, TN, and nephews John F. Baggett, III (Diane), Melbourne, FL, Charles Leslie Scott, III (Elizabeth), Tenafly, NJ, Bill Shutt (Edith), Nashville, TN, Dennis Brown, Fernley, NV, and Tim Brown (Angie), Chattanooga, TN, as well as a number of grandnieces and grandnephews, and her close friend from childhood to the present, Mary "Tootie" Merritt, Kinston, NC.

The funeral service will be held at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City at 11:00AM on Tuesday, February 5, 2013. Visitation will begin at 10:00AM prior to the service. Private burial will be at Fairmount Cemetery in Central City.
