OWENSBORO, Ky. (3/18/13) – This is the third in a series of columns submitted to SurfKY News from the youth of Majestry Christian Academy in Owensboro, KY. This article, authored by Amadeo Percy, speaks of growing up without a father. According to statistics, about 24 million children live in a home with no father. About 85% of all children that have behavioral disorders come from fatherless homes. About 71% of high school dropouts come from fatherless homes. About 75% of all children abusing drugs come from fatherless homes. About 70% of children in jail come from fatherless homes. About 90% of homeless and runaway children come from fatherless homes and lastly, 63% of suicides among youth come from fatherless homes (About.com – “Statistics on Fatherless Children in America” by Wayne Parker).

So if a fatherless child is reading this, I know how you feel.  I never knew my father but still I miss him. I feel sad when Fathers’ Day comes along and all my friends are so happy because they love their dads so much. But that’s no reason to commit suicide or do drugs or even run away. Doing drugs won’t bring him back; neither will committing suicide, or running away. Running away or taking your life would make you lose more than your dad. You’ll lose your family and friends. You’ll lose everything.

I saw a picture of my dad a few months ago and it made me feel really sad. But I have to choose to be happy and follow the right path despite what’s happened. Have a happy life and be thankful for what you have. Don’t destroy it by making wrong choices.
