drjGREENVILLE, Ky - Joseph David Stokes, 82, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday March 26, 2013.  Born on January 8th, 1931 and raised in Earlington, KY, he was the son of the late Frank Farmer Stokes and Frances Lillian Wyatt Stokes. He was a devoted husband for 55 years to the love of his life, Ann Kathrine (Stewart) Stokes, until her passing in 2009. They were the loving parents of seven children. He was a lifelong supporter of the Greenville United Methodist Church where he also served as a board member and was an active member of the local community.

Joe earned a B.S. degree from Western Kentucky State University and a M.D. degree from the University of Louisville. While pursuing his advanced education he served in the Army Reserves rising to the rank of Captain. After interning at St Joseph Hospital in Louisville and completing his residency in Radiology at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville he joined the staff of Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville, Ky. He served there as the resident Radiologist, board member, and as Chief of Staff during his tenure until his retirement. He also practiced at medical facilities in the surrounding counties and had several articles published in medical journals.

He enjoyed playing basketball as an adolescent and later in life playing tennis and snow skiing with his family. Along with his wife, he enjoyed attending their children's many activities which included athletic, band, scouts, and school events.

Survivors include his seven children, Dr. David Stokes, Cynthia Stuart, Karen Coffey, Patricia Stokes, Dr. Sylvia Gaiko, Linda Stokes and Thomas Stokes; his 14 grandchildren; 2 daughters-in-law; 3 sons-in-law; and 3 brothers.

Visitation will be held beginning at 12:00 pm Saturday March 30th with the funeral service following immediately after at 1:30 pm.   The visitation and funeral service will be held at Greenville United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville KY. Memorial gifts can be made to Greenville United Methodist Church. Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville, Ky. are in charge of arrangements.
