Henderson Middle School Students Compete in National Chemistry Competition

chemist challenge 300HENDERSON, Ky. (4/16/13) – On April 20, four middle school students from the Henderson area will show off their knowledge of chemistry concepts, important discoveries, and chemical safety awareness at the state level of a national chemistry competition.

Austin Meredith and Cole Privette, from Henderson County’s North Middle School and Shelby Pendergraft and Riley Kirchoff from Henderson County’s South Middle School will compete in Kentucky’s You Be The Chemist Challenge® state competition – an academic question and answer competition created by the Chemical Educational Foundation® (CEF). The State Challenge will be held at the Owensboro Museum of Science and History, located at 122 E. 2nd Street in Owensboro on April 20, at 10am (CT), and is open to the public. The Challenge aims to engage grade 5-8 students in chemistry through a dynamic event that partners members of the chemical industry with schools and organizations in the communities in which they operate.

The challenge is sponsored by Brenntag Mid-South located here in Henderson. “This annual competition is an amazing demonstration of the youth’s knowledge and desire to learn,” says local Brenntag organizer, Kenny Galbraith. “The Henderson science teachers, Steve Mintner and Jamie Boeglin, have dedicated their personal time and brought a lot of excitement to the program in the local middle schools. Through this program, the students are introduced to the important roles chemistry has in our daily lives. We want to raise awareness of the broad importance of chemicals and chemical safety as well as the viable career path options the chemical industry offers.”

The winner of the state competition will advance to represent Kentucky in the National You Be The Chemist Challenge held in Philadelphia, PA, on June 24th at the Kimmel Center. There they will compete with state representatives from across the country for the title of 2012-2013 National You Be The Chemist Challenge® Champion.

At the national competition, each participant will receive fun prizes, such as chemistry kits, T-shirts and gift certificates to the Discovery Channel Store. The first through fourth place winners will also receive scholarships for future educational use. And, in addition to the Challenge and prizes, participants and a chaperone will also be treated to various activities in historic Philadelphia, such as a visit to The Franklin Institute, an interactive science museum, and a dinner celebration at the National Constitution Center. For more information about the competition, please visit the CEF website at www.chemed.org and Facebook Page.
