Public Input Reported to Mahr Park Planning Committee

glema mahr 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (7/16/13) – Although Madisonville's Mahr Park is still in its conception phase, the planning committee has identified four key areas that are crucial to the development - the development of the Glema Mahr home, that was bequeathed to the city by the late Glema Mahr, a nature area and trails and an amphitheater.

The planning committee met with representatives of the Lose & Associates Landscape Architecture firm Monday, July 15 at city hall. Several artists’ renderings of possible development throughout the 265-acre tract on the eastern shore of Lake Peewee, that was part of Mahr's estate, were shown to the committee.

One public hearing on the park has been held and another is planned for August. Public appealing areas identified during the hearing included a dog park, Kentucky wildflower areas, playgrounds, picnic areas, an event center for weddings and gatherings, walking trails, a vegetable garden, flowering gardens, orchards, a sculpture trail, bird sanctuary, kayak launch, a gazebo, outdoor classrooms and an arboretum.

Lose & Associates assimilated the information and presented it to the planning committee during its meeting.

The event center and amphitheater, were two aspects of the planned park, were identified areas that could generate revenue to help sustain it.

Committee member and Madisonville Community Development Director Daron Jordan recommended an archaeological study has been done as part of the development phase. Committee member and Madisonville City Councilwoman Hannah Myers suggested that plans include a walking trail long enough to accommodate a 5K run or walk.

A nesting place for Bald Eagles is a concept that Lose & Associates believes would provide opportunities for class studies as well as live camera feed to watch the National Bird's nesting habits.

Artwork display areas for inside the main house for Mahr's Ray Harm art collection is another key area for the planned park.
