MHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. — James Darrell (Jim) Bethel, 78, of Greenville, Ky. passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Muhlenberg Community Hospital Emergency Department after a sudden illness. He was born on April 19, 1936 in Muhlenberg County to the late Howard and Hallie Jessup Bethel. He was a member of Second Baptist Church, and he was a longtime construction worker. He retired from Peabody Coal Company as a UMWA coal miner. He had worked at Gibraltar Coal Mines.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Bobbie Murphey.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Paula Smith Bethel of Greenville, Ky.; one son, Tim (Ginger) Bethel of Central City, Ky.; one daughter, Jamie (Rick) Hall of Greenville, Ky.; three grandchildren, Bethany (Jerry) Knight, Brett (Theresa) Hall, and Jason (Jodi) Palmer; eight great-grandchildren, Kamden, Kaylor, Tristan, Caden, Preston, Faith, Tyler, and Alyssa; one brother, Terry (Patsy) of St. Louis, Mo.; three sisters, Maudine Wolff of Elkton, Ky., Wilda Caskey of Madisonville, Ky., and Sandra (Rodney) Poe of Bowling Green, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2014 from Second Baptist Church in Greenville by Reverend Bob Thurman with burial to follow in Woodland Cemetery in Greenville, Kentucky. Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville, Ky. is in charge of arrangements.
