Business Spotlight - Lake Venus Lives Again

BREMEN, Ky. (6/20/14) — Business is booming at Lake Venus in Bremen, which offers a great place to swim.

It is located at the intersection of  Kentucky 175 North and Kentucky 181.

Rosie Campbell, who owns and operates the lake with her husband, Bobby Campbell said the crowds are growing.

"On a recent Saturday the lake hosted 553 swimmers while on week days we see between 150 to 175 swimmers," she said.

Bobby and Rosie bought Lake Venus in 2010 and re-opened it in 2011. The lake represented great childhood memories for both Bobby and Rosie, who had worked at Lake Venus, when he was young and Rosie, who spent many summer days as a date at the lake.

"Both of us just wanted to give others in the area the opportunity to swim here," she said.

After the Campbell's bought the lake, they graded down the hill to nearly level and covered it with sand to form a nice beach.

The old diving platforms have been replaced. The lake also has a water trampoline and a floating dock.

The Putt Putt golf course has been restored with new turf and the concrete statues repaired and repainted.   The bath houses have also been refurbished. The bridge leading to the exit of the lake has been repaired making egress from the lake much easier.

Campbell is proud of the lake and what it offers.

"Lake Venus is fed by natural springs so that as you swim you will notice cold places in the water,” she said. “Those cold places are where the natural springs feed the lake. "

The Lake includes other amenities such as picnic tables with grills for a family-cooked meal or food is available at the snack bar.  On the July 4 weekend, Lake Venus will start offering primitive camping sites available for rent.  Next year, Campbell plans to have hookups available so that people can bring campers to the sites.

Campbell said other improvements are also being planned to enhance visitor satisfaction with the lake.

"We plan to offer fishing tournaments as the property contains five lakes populated with catfish, bass and bluegill,” she said. “A waterslide is going to be added to the lake along with a disc golf course.  The course is going to be laid out by H.B. Clark of Bowling Green. These are the same people that laid out the disc golf course in the Madisonville City Park."

Lake Venus is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 per person. Putt Putt golf is $2 per person. The park is available for rental after regular business hours.

Campbell believes the prices are reasonable.

"We want people to come spend a day with us and not spend a fortune," she said.
