The tournament attracts about 150 participants each year and brings tennis players from around the region and out of state. The registration deadline is July 23.
This fun event features friendly competition for a great cause. Proceeds go to benefit the Goodfellows Club, which provides children in need with shoes, coats and clothing, emergency dental care and an annual Christmas Party.
The tournament honors Luke Woodward, who started playing tennis at the age of 7 and made the high school varsity team at age 12. In 1995, he and his doubles partner won the boys state doubles championship. He went on to play on scholarship at the University of Missouri, and later on an USTA team while at law school at the University of Kentucky.
Woodward died from an aneurysm at age 25. The Goodfellows Club and the Owensboro tennis community partner to honor his memory. Many of his high school and college friends come back to Owensboro to play in the tournament.
The event features several categories of competition - Open (4.5 or above), A (4.0), B (3.5), & C (3.0 or below); Men/Women Singles; Doubles and Mixed Doubles. All participants will receive a T-shirt.
