charles shanksOWENSBORO, Ky. – Charles Maurice Shanks of Owensboro went to be with his Lord on July 14, 2014. He was born April 4, 1922 on Buttermilk Road, Bremen, Ky. He was known to his family as "Dee" and as "Charlie" to many of his friends. He was a member of Third Baptist Church, Owensboro. He was a graduate of Bremen School, where he played basketball; a graduate of Lain Drafting College, a Kentucky Colonel, Retired General Electric Product designer, and a Navy Veteran. While serving in the US Navy during World War II, he was assigned to the USS Schmitt a Buckley-class destroyer. He was a "trusted shellback" in the Ancient Order of the Deep having crossed the equator June 23 1945 while aboard the Schmitt. He loved race horses, having seen Secretariat race while attending the Kentucky Derby. He was a UK Hoops Fan, NCAA Basketball Fan, NCAA Softball Fan and a fan of Daviess County Sports. He was designated Daviess County Softball's "#1 Fan" supporting the program for many years. He could be seen at most all games cheering on his Lady Panthers.

He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Jeannette (Jean) Patton; five brothers, Wilburn, Earl, Ralph, Doyle and Jackie; five sisters Opal Rhodes, Voyne Douglas, Louise Schmied, Ava Nell Bruce and Glenda Rich; many nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and great-nephews; many great-great nieces and great-great nephews; a great-great-great niece; a friend Steve (Lisa) Waninger of Owensboro; and his caregivers, Niece Lana (Ray) Moore of Madisonville, and Great-Nephew Jarrod (Amy) Douglas of Central City.

Funeral services will be Friday, July 18, 2014, noon at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City, with Pastor Marsellis French officiating and Rev. Tim Adcock assisting. Visitation will be Thursday after 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A committal service will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Owensboro Memorial Gardens, with entombment to follow.
