Smoke-Free Ky. Will Kick Off 2015 Campaign with a Statewide Tour To Fancy Farm

smflogoKENTUCKY (7/23/14) — On the eve of the Fancy Farm Picnic, the Smoke-Free Kentucky Coalition will wind up a 10-city tour at Baptist Health Paducah at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, to seek support for a statewide smoke-free law.

The campaign bus will be at the picnic from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2.

At each “On the Road to a Healthier Kentucky” stop, the Smoke-Free Coalition will speak to the media, rally supporters and reach out to legislators urging them to join 24 other states in passing a statewide smoke-free law that covers all indoor workplaces and public places, including bars and restaurants. The tour’s goal is to engage public support before the 2015 legislative session, according to chairperson Amy Barkley.

Barkley chairs the coalition, which represents the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, the American Lung Association, the American Heart Association, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, and other local health, businesses and community partners working to make all indoor workplaces and public places in Kentucky smoke-free.

“2015 is the year we are finally going to pass a smoke-free law and protect everyone’s right to breathe clean air in Kentucky,” said Barkley. “We know Kentuckians support going smoke-free, and we’re touring the state to call attention to those supporters.”

During the last four legislative sessions, State Rep. Susan Westrom introduced statewide smoke-free workplace bills.

The coalition notes the following support:

  • 65 percent of Kentuckians favor a smoke-free workplace law.

  • More than 500 health organizations, community groups and businesses – including the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce – have endorsed the law to improve health and reduce health care costs.

Barkley said secondhand smoke exposure causes about 1,000 deaths a year in Kentucky. “It is time for Kentucky to protect everyone’s right to breathe smoke-free air,” she said. “No one should have to choose between their lives and their livelihoods.”
